What is Retention?
Judicial retention in Cook County is the process where sitting judges do not run against a challenger,
instead appearing on the November General Election ballot for voters to decide whether they remain
on the bench. Voters are asked to vote “Yes” to keep the judge or “No” to remove the judge.
To retain their seat for another term, each judge must receive at least 60% of the “Yes” vote.
Why Vote Yes to Retain Judges
An independent judiciary is the cornerstone of democracy. It guarantees that the rule of law prevails
over political passions and public opinion. As we celebrate 250 years as a free and democratic nation,
it is important we remember that an independent judiciary is at the heart of our democracy and our
constitution. An independent judiciary is the safe guard of all of our rights.
Voting for judge is one of the most important votes a voter casts. Our justice system relies on the
integrity, impartiality and expertise of our judges. The decisions made by judges affect not only
attorneys but also the lives of countless individual’s seeking justice.
Judicial decisions impact issues ranging from civil rights and criminal justice to business regulation and
family matters. As a voter, you can have a lasting impact on our justice system. Judges are entrusted
with the responsibility of delivering justice fairly and impartially. They do not write the laws or make
the law. Judges must have a deep understanding of the law. They must make their decisions based on
the law and the facts and evidence presented to the court. Neither their personal feelings, nor those
of any outside influence, should be allowed to influence a judges decision.
The founding fathers understood that judges who apply the law freely and fairly are essential to the
rule of law. Please Vote “YES” to retain these judges – judges who are experienced, independent,
qualified and fair. All were elected by the people of Cook County to serve as a judge. These are judges
who know the law and apply it with common sense and compassion.
Because experience matters Vote “YES” to retain all of these experienced judges.
