Judge Matthew E. Coghlan

Accolades: The Chicago Bar Association says of Judge Matthew E. Coghlan: “Judge Coghlan knows the law and is a hardworking, fair and compassionate judge.”  For the 2012 and 2006 retention ballots Judge Coghlan was found ‘Highly Qualified”, “Qualified,” or “Recommended” for retention by every bar association to review his credentials.

Judicial Experience: Judge Matthew E.Coghlan was elected to the bench in 2000 and retained by voters in 2006 and 2012.  Judge Coghlan is assigned to the Criminal Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, where he hears felony criminal cases. His previous judicial assignments include presiding over felony preliminary hearings, bond court, domestic violence cases and traffic matters in the 1st Municipal District.

Legal Experience: Prior to becoming a Judge, Judge Matthew E. Coghlan worked as an Assistant State’s Attorney for 13 years. His assignments included stints in the Narcotics Division, Gang Crimes Unit, Felony Trial Division, Sixth Municipal District and Appeals Division.

Education: University of Illinois College of Law (J.D.); University of Illinois (B.A.); Marist High School

Public Service:  Prior to his election to the bench Judge Coghlan served as a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department from 1997 to 2000.  Judge Coghlan is active in his community and has served as a coach and on his parish pastoral council.
