Judge Diane M. Shelley

Judicial Experience: Judge Diane M. Shelley is assigned to the Law Division, Individual Commercial Calendar where she hears complex commercial matters from inception through trial. Judge Shelley was first assigned to criminal domestic violence court for two years, and became a frequent speaker on the topic.
Legal Experience: After practicing law for approximately twenty-five years Judge Shelley was elected judge in 2006 from Cook County’s 5th Judicial Subcircuit, and retained in 2012. Immediately prior to becoming judge, Judge Shelley was head of litigation at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District; litigating and managing construction contract disputes, environmental violations, and the Deep Tunnel Project. She was born and raised in the Bronzeville area of Chicago and attended Chicago Public Schools.

Membership: Judge Shelley is the Second Vice President of the Illinois Judges Association and former Chair of the Illinois Judicial Council. She is a member of numerous bar associations and civic organizations. She is a member of the Special Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Justice and Mental Health Planning and is a Commissioner with the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism. She is a member of the Cook County Bar Association and the Black Women Lawyer’s Association.
