Justice Mary Ellen Coghlan
Mary Ellen Coghlan was assigned by the Illinois Supreme Court to the Illinois Appellate Court in August, 2019. As an Appellate Justice, she has authored numerous decisions in both criminal and civil appeals.
Justice Coghlan was first appointed as a Circuit Court Judge in 1995. She was elected in 1996 and has been retained three times, in 2002, 2008 and 2014.
Justice Coghlan’s previous assignments in the Circuit Court of Cook County include the First Municipal District, Criminal and Probate Divisions. In December, 2010, Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans appointed her as the Presiding Judge of the Probate Division, where she supervised 13 judges and an administrative staff.
Prior to becoming a judge, Justice Coghlan worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Cook County from 1982 until 1987 and as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois from 1987 until 1995.
